It is now elephant! (10th Nov. 2010)
Evidence of elephants roaming closer to estate boundary. On his visit to Hamilton Division of the estate with an executive from head office the Superintendent had found some fresh elephant dung in the jungle just at the verge of Estate upper boundary situated in this division at an altitude 1,850 m. The droppings were relatively smaller than those of the elephants commonly seen both in captivity and in jungles. This is a good evidence for record of the existence of smaller size elephants (kuru aliya) in the peak wilderness. Now we are on eager watch to see the herd. |

End of a Sambar (16th Nov. 2010)
A partly eaten carcass of a female sambar was found in a leader drain just below the road in field No.8 of Hamilton Division, evidently killed by a leopard. Apparently, the leopard had its prey on the sambur when she was busy eating the leaves of calliandra trees planted to provide low shade to tea. The impressions of leopard’s paws were clearly visible on the wet surface of soil, giving a clue for assumption that it was a fair sized animal; possibly the one seen by the Superintendent and, obviously it is operating in this particular zone. Some dogs too from worker housings have gone missing and possibly the leopard had got attracted to the area, since sumptuous meals are free in the zone. |
